Signs of a Severe Thunderstorm

When it Rains...it Pours

Living in Tornado Alley for some part of my life I know there are signs in nature that the "big one" is coming.

First, birds glide in the air with ease...in those creepy, low, dark hanging clouds. There is a calm just before the storm that I cannot describe--you just feel it.

Second, worms actually crawl out of the ground and wiggle their way onto the pavement---before there is rain! This happens everytime the storm is about to hit.

Third, here it comes---the sky gets angry and a fierce wind blows through--almost as a warning to take shelter.

Last--the anger gets more intense--thunder and lightning spark up the horizon and its here---a dark and hazey storm. Tornado, flood, and t-storm warnings fill the news, but you already knew when you saw "the signs".

To my readers: I wrote this in the middle of our first huge thunderstorm of Spring--hope you enjoy because I'm stuck in my house right now!! Jen

I'm from Oklahoma, lived very near Lawton towards the OKC area...tornado alley was its nickname -- is that the area you are refering to?  Man, I spent many a night watching the sky -- dodgning hail, and sittin' in a cellar.   Still, the storms carried a certain excitement, as long as no one was hurt.  There's a special "frizzzt" to the air that get's ya goin' -- Lots of storm chasers in that state.

I can smell the mesquite now...I was raised in New Mexico...and when the mesquite bushes gave off a certain smell...you could tell storms were coming.

To this day...I love cloudy days.  What am I doin' in the Sunshine State?  hmmm don't ask me.  I'm not a sun worshiper.  go figure.

Eerie how it gets before the storm isn't it. Here (IL) the clouds seem to hang lower and take a on greenish tint. And it gets real quiet. Even my birds get real quiet (which for cockatiels is rare LOL) The dogs pace and whine a lot too. We usually get a sudden drop in air temp too right befoe those winds hit. BTW it's storming here now to. And from the looks of it we'll be getting what you have now, later tonight. Certainly can tell that Spring has arrived!

this reminds me of when my oldest child was in kindergarden//My son..and it was thundering and lightning out and the children were frightened..my son told them not to worry "It is just God taken flash pictures" that was back when we still used flash camera's. Aren't children wonderful? The teacher told him if he ever ran for President she would vote for Him :o) Glad that never happened...Thanks for the reminder and hope your storm leaves soon....G-Ma :o) hugs

there was a pretty bad storm in the distance and i noticed that the firefly flashes were really short, no birds answered my calls, and i felt a weird stillness. are these all signs of really severe weather?
